Guzheng (or the gu-zheng, or the zheng, or the cheng) is a Chinese zither / harp with 16 to 25 strings and a moveable bridge.

Weishan Liu is one of the world's leading guzheng virtuosos. She began training in the classical style of the guzheng from the age of eleven when the acclaimed guzheng master Cao Zheng (1920-2002) picked her as his student at the Shenyang Music Conservatory.

Ms. Liu moved to the United States in 1982 and was a pioneer in the teaching of guzheng. She taught thousands of students, and also founded the San Francisco Guzheng Music Society to promote the music of the guzheng and traditional Chinese music and culture.

She has performed with the Chinese Orchestras of Berkeley and Los Angeles, as well as with the Bay Area Women's Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Palo Alto Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ms. Liu has lent her expertise to recording soundtracks for films such as Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom, Dim Sum, Eat A Bowl of Tea, Five Chinese Brothers, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, and many others.

"Weishan Liu is one of the world's leading Gu-Zheng virtuosos. Her music is deeply expressive, and combines deep feelings, strength, heart, emotion, experience, and wisdom."
George Winston, pianist

"The guzheng is a fascinating instrument made all the more fascinating in Ms. Liu's nimble hands. Joined by her gifted student, Anna Wong, Ms. Liu gave a subtle and compelling demonstration of her chosen instrumental passion. Ms Liu asserts mastery through a nuanced approach to the instrument, coaxing diverse shadings and ornamentations of vibrato, working both sides of the prominent bridge on the instrument. An enchanting — and educational — encounter."
