"... sultry Jazz singer"

Mac McDonald, Monterey
Herald
"I attended a Jazz show in Carmel,
California. I was enjoying the Jazz quartet that was playing; then
it was announced that they had a guest singer named Julie Capili.
I had never heard of her so I was anxious to hear what she sounded
like. Wow! Her vocal style was truly amazing! I was amazed at her
talent and ability to dazzle the crowd. One gentleman heard her
and immediately wanted to book her for some event that he and his
wife were organizing. I was able to talk with Julie and she is a
very nice and down-to-earth person as well. I think that is why
her singing is so great, because she really puts her genuine personality
into her songs and the renditions of songs that she sings. That
is another thing worth mentioning, she can take a classic female
Jazz vocalist's song and make it hers while still retaining the
elements of the song that makes it a favorite."

Julie Capili is a singer/songwriter
whose creativity and playfulness are evident in her music, bringing
a sense of joy and wonder to her performances. Her subtlety and
exquisite control display a maturity beyond her years. Her influences
are eclectic, including artists such as Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald,
Eva Cassidy, and Tori Amos. And although her voice has drawn comparisons
to many great singers, she possesses a style of her own.
Julie plays as a duo with widely respected pianist Marshall Otwell.
Mr. Otwell was the pianist and musical director for Carmen McRae
for more than 8 years. He also toured extensively with Freddie Hubbard,
Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charlie Musselwhite. During his career he
has performed and/or recorded with many of the best known musicians
in jazz, including Michael Brecker, Ray Brown, Benny Carter, Richie
Cole, Chick Corea, Robben Ford, Dizzy Gillespie, Kitty Margolis,
John Patitucci, Della Reese, Cal Tjader, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan,
and many others. He played solo jazz piano at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
as opening act for Diane Schuur and LaVay Smith in the annual Kuumbwa
Jazz Center fundraising events. He has been a member of the Kuumbwa
Jazz Board of Trustees since 2009.
