Pan Montuno is an instrumental journey that infuses melodic Caribbean steel drum music with innovative Latin rhythms. Derek Smith has been entertaining audiences for decades through his musical mix that combines the melodic brightness of the Caribbean steel drum with the driving rhythms of Calypso and Latin Jazz. Smith's unique sound is inspired by legendary musicians like timbales king Tito Puente, Latin Jazz vibraphone great Cal Tjader, and calypso master Lord Kitchener. The influence of such renowned players has led Smith to create an original musical experience that can be described as soulful and joyous.
Some of the most talented and recognized musicians in the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas join together with Smith to provide outstanding, upbeat musical performances..
The band performs at public events throughout the state of California and is available for private events, as well. For ceremonies, small parties or when ambient music is needed, a soloist, duo, or trio can be provided. For concerts, clubs, festivals, dance parties or larger wedding receptions, a quartet, quintet or sextet would be suggested. The band is available in the following formats:
SOLO:
A solo steel drummer is accompanied by pre-recorded rhythm section and sequencer. You'll be amazed how much sound one can get from this set-up.
DUO:
The duo consists of a steel drummer plus a bassist. Another option would be steel drum bass or guitar as the second musician. Acoustic or amplified.
TRIO:
The instruments included in the trio are: steel drums, bass guitar, and percussion/drums. The bass guitar can be substituted by a steel drum bass when requested.
QUARTET:
The quartet can be any four instruments. The usual configuration is two steel drummers, a bassist, and a percussionist.
