Tim Johnson, the 2007 recipient of
the Western Music Association's "Instrumentalist of the Year" award,
leads this American West acoustic trio. Teaming up with his brother
Keith Johnson and cousin Sonny Coelho as the Sierra Riders, the
group performs a wide range of western, early jazz, swing, and gospel
music with an emphasis on the history and educational values of
the American West.
Tim has been performing music for just about any kind of event one
could imagine since the age of eight, winning local and regional
music contests as a fiddler and classical violinist. A versatile
musician/songwriter who performs all styles of music, Tim is in
demand as a session player in country, western, gospel, blues, jazz,
and rock music genres. For 7 years, Tim was a member of and toured
nationally with The Sons of the San Joaquin. A music educator, Tim
holds a B.A. in Business management with an emphasis in the management
of music artists. He also holds an M.A. in music education from
California State University-Fresno, with an emphasis in violin studies
and music of the American West. Tim is the founder and music director
of the Merced College Orchestra and is currently pursuing his Doctorate
degree in music education from Boston University.
The other members of the band have equally impressive resumes, having
performed music since adolescence. They are all committed to the
preservation and cultural integration of Cowboy Music in the 21st
century. The Sierra Riders not only accurately portray the life
of the singing cowboy, but also capture the spirit of Western Swing
in the classic style of Bob Wills, The Sons of the Pioneers, Gene
Autry, and others. Additional musicians (pedal steel, drums) may
be added upon request.
