Juice Newton

Juice Newton Juice Newton has been called a lot of things...

... the "Queen of Hearts," "Angel of the Morning," "The Sweetest Thing," all titles of Juices' biggest hits. "American Girl" is her newest moniker taken from the title of her new album. But this "American Girl" isn't just the typical mom, country and apple pie. For typical is one word that has never described Juice Newton.

Juice's musical tastes were developed early. She grew up in Virginia Beach, singing her emotional, heartfelt folk songs in area coffee houses. Later, Juice went west for college and formed a folk-rock trio in Northern California. The trio, known as Silver Spur, developed a large following. Because of their growing popularity, Silver Spur headed to Los Angeles, where after constant work in area clubs, they were signed to RCA. Their experience with RCA led them to Capitol records where Juice made her mark with such hits as "Angel of the Morning," "Queen of Hearts", and her first country hit, "The Sweetest Thing." Through the mid-eighties, she followed these hits with "Break It To Me Gently" , which won her a Grammy, "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me", and "A Little Love". A second signing with RCA produced a string of top 10 country hits such as "You Want To Make You Mine", "Hurt", "Old Flame", "Cheap Love", "Both To Each Other", "Tell Me True", and "What Can I Do With My Heart?"

"I got into music for the immense sense of personal joy I received from putting a thought or emotion across to people. It's how I communicate best and most comfortably," said Juice when asked about what keeps her going in an ever-changing business. "I've had my share of success, in the sense of awards and honors, which are great, and I'd love a few more, but the fulfillment I get personally -- from the music itself -- is the reason I can fly or drive to a new town every night, get on stage, and love what I'm doing."

It is obvious on stage that Juice loves what she's doing. She is always in motion, displaying vocal dynamics and a commanding presence. Juice credits her enthusiastic performances to the philosophy of owing your audience more than just going through the motions. "I go out there wanting to have a good time and making sure the audience does too."

Juice has easily straddled the fence between the changing definitions of pop and country, and enjoys showcasing her varied musical tastes and influences. This musical diversity is evident in her stage show. She keeps her performances fresh and varied with the energy of her top-notch touring band, and the intimacy of an acoustic trio.

Otha Young, Juice's longtime musical partner and songwriter, said, "We wanted to rediscover our early folk roots, so we decided to include the trio in our show. The acoustic segment has proven so popular that the trio now does entire shows in more intimate settings. With the acoustic segment, we now can give the audience the full spectrum of Juice's music."

That spectrum is wide but identifiable. This Grammy Award winning artist takes the audience on an emotion-filled ride from the soul searing "Hurt," to the rollicking "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me," to the plea of "Break It To Me Gently." These songs and others have propelled Juice's "Greatest Hits" album to platinum, adding to her collection of gold and platinum certifications.

Through her pop and country hits, her distinctive voice and entertaining performance skills, Juice continues to captivate audiences of every age worldwide. As one music critic stated, "Newton remains one of the most riveting performers in country music, rocking on stage and playing each emotion for what it's worth."
